Behind The Design: artist Bev Rhett

Hi there! I hope everyone is having a great week. I know there’s been a slight hiatus here due to last month’s birthday festivities (still wrapping my head around 29!), but I’m back today with an exciting Behind The Design, featuring none other than one of my favorite aunts, self-taught artist, Bev Rhett! Bev is my mom’s younger sister by 8 1/2 years, and ever since I can remember she has been painting! 065Bev has been producing art professionally for over 30 years. When her family moved to upstate New York 20 years ago, she brought her love for art and teaching with her, and started teaching art lessons to children and adults out of her studio at home. About a year and a half ago, however, Bev’s world turned upside down and her paint brushes took a rest, as she was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer. While this is a very aggressive form of breast cancer, Bev remained extremely strong and had the most up-beat attitude. Radiation therapy was the final obstacle of treatments for Bev during her breast cancer journey. And where did she choose to undergo radiation?? Richmond!!! My parents welcomed her into their home with open arms for eight weeks of intense radiation therapy. After a few weeks of therapy, Bev was feeling great, and wanted to pull out her paint brushes from hibernation. So, in true Kastelberg fashion, we put her to work! My sister and brother have both recently moved into new homes, so they both felt they needed to incorporate art in various rooms. A cow, bouquet of flowers, and a river landscape for my sister: IMG_0444 IMG_0443 IMG_0441 And a very special wall mural for my nieces’ playroom! IMG_0361 IMG_0362 IMG_0366 IMG_0365 And today, I am happy to report that Bev is now in full remission and cancer free!!! 0508051826a In addition to painting, Bev has always been an avid animal lover. So, naturally, she paints the most realistic and highly detailed pet portraits! Dogs, cats, horses, and even bunnies! unnamedQBOPEXIWunnamedS04QZJ6YunnamedTYMK4QSGAdorable, right?!?
